What Happens If Your Bali VOA Expires? Overstay Fines, Penalties & How to Avoid Them

Overstaying your Bali Visa on Arrival is one of the most costly — and avoidable — mistakes travellers make. This guide covers the exact penalties, how immigration enforces overstay rules, and what to do if you accidentally overstay.

What Counts as an Overstay?

Your Bali VOA or e-VOA grants you a specific expiry date stamped in your passport. If you remain in Indonesia after that date without a valid extension or new visa, you are officially overstaying. Your 30-day initial VOA can be extended once for another 30 days — making a maximum legal stay of 60 days. After that, you must depart or you are overstaying.

Overstay Fines in Indonesia (2026)

Indonesia’s immigration law imposes a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day of overstay, based on the Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011 and its implementing regulations. Key facts:

  • The fine cap is 60 days worth of fines (IDR 60,000,000 maximum) before more serious consequences apply.
  • After 60 days of overstay, you may face deportation, a temporary entry ban, or in severe cases, detention pending deportation.
  • Fines are paid at the immigration office or airport departure immigration counter.
  • You cannot board your flight until the fine is settled and your documentation is cleared.

How Indonesian Immigration Detects Overstays

Indonesia uses an automated passenger tracking system at departure. When you check out through immigration, your passport is scanned and your arrival date verified against your current visa stamp. Any discrepancy triggers an automatic flag. There is no way to exit without this being caught at the departure gate.

What Happens at the Airport if You Overstay?

If you overstay and attempt to depart:

  1. Immigration officers will hold your passport and calculate the overstay period.
  2. You will be taken to the immigration fine payment desk.
  3. You pay the fine in IDR (exact change preferred; card payment is available at major airports including Ngurah Rai Bali).
  4. After payment, you receive a clearance receipt and your passport is returned.
  5. You are allowed to board — but your overstay record stays in the immigration system.

Build extra time into your schedule — this process can take 1–3 hours at busy periods.

Can an Overstay Lead to an Entry Ban?

Yes. Short overstays (1–3 days, especially with documented medical or emergency circumstances) often result in a fine only. Longer overstays or repeat offences may trigger a temporary entry ban on your passport, typically 6–12 months. Deportation procedures apply to overstays beyond 60 days or to those who refuse to pay fines.

How to Avoid Overstaying

  • Mark your visa expiry date clearly in your calendar or travel app when you arrive.
  • Apply for your extension at least 5 days before expiry — not on the last day. Immigration offices in Bali (Kantor Imigrasi Kelas I Khusus TPI Ngurah Rai in Denpasar) can be busy.
  • If you need to stay longer than 60 days, research alternative visas (B211A, Social Visa, KITAS) before your VOA expires.
  • If you fall seriously ill and cannot travel, contact the nearest Indonesian immigration office immediately with medical documentation — they have procedures for documented medical extensions.

Emergency: What to Do if You Have Already Overstayed

Do not try to exit without addressing the overstay — it will be caught regardless. Instead:

  1. Go to the nearest Kantor Imigrasi (immigration office) proactively before departure.
  2. Declare the overstay, bring your passport and any supporting documentation (medical, emergency, etc.).
  3. Pay the applicable fines.
  4. Officers may also assist with a formal clearance letter for your departure.

Self-reporting proactively is viewed more favourably than being caught at the departure gate.

FAQ

Can I pay the overstay fine by card at Ngurah Rai Airport Bali?

Card payment is available at Ngurah Rai (Bali’s main international airport). However, bring IDR cash as backup — card machines are occasionally unavailable due to technical issues.

Will an overstay affect my future visa applications to Indonesia?

It depends on the overstay length. Minor overstays (1–2 days) with fines paid typically do not result in an entry ban. Longer overstays or those that resulted in deportation proceedings may complicate future visa applications. If unsure, consult a licensed immigration consultant before your next visit.
